A young man asked an old rich man how he made his money.

The old guy fingered his worsted wool vest and said,

"Well, son, it was 1932. The depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last nickel.

I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I sold the apple for ten cents.

The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I spent the entire day polishing them and sold them at 5:00 pm for 20 cents. I continued this system for a month, by the end of which I'd accumulated a fortune of $1.37.

Then my wife's father died and left us two million dollars."

一人の青年が年老いた富豪に、一体どうやって富を築いたのかを訪ねた。

老富豪は毛織りのベストを指先でいじりながら言った。

「そう、あれは１９３２年、大恐慌のまっただ中の事だった。私は最後の５セント硬貨を握りしめていた。
私はその５セントでリンゴを１個買った。それから丸一日かかってそのリンゴを磨き続け、一日の終わりに、同じリンゴを１０セントで売ることができた。
次の日、今度はその１０セントでリンゴを２個買った。そして丸一日かかってリンゴを磨き上げ、夕方にはそれらを２０セントで売ることができた。
私は同じ事を１ヶ月続けた。月末には私の財産は１ドル３７セントにまで増えていた。
その時、突然、妻の父親が亡くなり、私たちに２００万ドルの財産が転がり込んできたっていう訳さ」
